There are a few things that patients should know about how the whole process of getting dentures goes. While each person has their own unique situation, things should usually unfold like this.
Immediate or Conventional?
The patient who is getting a complete set has a choice. They can get immediate dentures right after the teeth are extracted. That means that the dentist or specialist will prepare a set to be placed. The benefit of this is that the patient will not have to be walking around with missing teeth. There’s a drawback, though. Their gums are going to heal and that means things are going to shift around with their dentures. As a result, they will need to have them re-fitted and re-lined more often than with conventional.
Conventional dentures have a roughly 8-12 post-extraction recovery period to allow for the gums and jawbone to heal before the dentures are put in.
The Process
After the dentist or specialist has determined what type of denture is needed, they take impressions of the mouth and then several models are made and the patient tries them on until there’s a consensus fit.
Even with immediate dentures, this will not be a short process. There will be several visits required, but the end goal is to make sure that everything fits properly and that the patient is comfortable with their new addition in their mouth.
Post Procedure
Once everything has settled in, the patient needs to be attuned to how the dentures feel in their mouth. Discomfort is one thing – that’s temporary. It’s pain that lingers that they should be worries about. That can indicate either a sore or an infection. Since gum disease can get dangerous very quickly, they should quickly see their dentist if they notice any more swelling or pain.
There will be a difference in the way that they speak and what they eat. Each day, they must brush them at least once a day to remove any food particles and then soak them overnight to ensure their sterility.
